Abstract
The concept of miracles occupies a significant position in Islamic theology and the study of Prophethood, as miracles are traditionally understood as extraordinary signs manifested by Allah Almighty through His Prophets as evidence of their truthfulness. Throughout the history of Islamic thought, Muslim scholars have discussed the nature, possibility, occurrence, and theological significance of miracles in the light of the Qur'an, Sunnah, rational argumentation, and established theological principles. In the modern period, however, the interpretation of miracles became an important subject of intellectual debate, particularly among Muslim thinkers who sought to address the challenges posed by modern rationalism, scientific thought, and changing intellectual circumstances. In the context of South Asian Muslim thought, Syed Sulaiman Nadwi and Maulana Aslam Jairajpuri represent two significant approaches to this subject. This research presents a comparative and critical study of the concept of miracles in the thought of Syed Sulaiman Nadwi and Maulana Aslam Jairajpuri. The study aims to examine their respective approaches towards the nature and significance of miracles, their interpretation of miraculous events, their treatment of transmitted traditions, and the relationship between reason and revelation in understanding miracles. It also evaluates their views in the light of the classical Islamic intellectual tradition, particularly the approaches of Muslim theologians, scholars of Hadith, exegetes, and scholars of Prophetic biography.
The study employs a qualitative, analytical, and comparative methodology. Relevant primary and secondary sources have been examined, with particular attention to the writings of both scholars and classical Arabic works dealing with miracles, Prophethood, Hadith, and Islamic theology. The findings indicate that Syed Sulaiman Nadwi generally approaches miracles within the framework of the established Islamic tradition. He gives considerable importance to the Qur'an, authentic Prophetic traditions, and the scholarly heritage of the Muslim Ummah, while also taking rational considerations into account. His understanding of miracles therefore remains closely connected with the traditional concept of supernatural events as signs of Prophetic truthfulness. The research concludes that the fundamental difference between the two scholars lies not primarily in their recognition of Prophethood but in their methodological approaches to revelation, transmitted reports, rational interpretation, and the nature of miraculous events. The comparative study also demonstrates the continuing significance of the relationship between reason and revelation in contemporary Islamic thought.
