Abstract
Abstract
Assessment plays a pivotal role in English language education by measuring learners' progress andinforming instructional decisions. This study aimed to identify the opportunities and threats in assessmentpractices of English as a Second Language (ESL) at the secondary level in Punjab, Pakistan. A quantitativedescriptive survey design was employed, using a structured questionnaire to identify opportunities and threats inassessment practices. The population comprised all public secondary school English teachers in Punjab,Pakistan. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 301 (187 male and 114 female) secondaryschool English teachers. Data were analyzed through frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, ttests, and one-way ANOVA. The results revealed several opportunities including online assessment platforms, speech recognition software, grammar checking tools, portfolio-based assessment, and rubric-based evaluation. However, significant threats were also identified including lack of emphasis on listening and speaking in boardexaminations, absence of standardized assessment tools, limited technological resources, inadequate teacherassessment literacy, heavy workloads, and parental pressure for high marks leading to traditional testingmethods. The findings suggest that strategic reforms in teacher training, assessment literacy development, andexamination system revision are essential to enhance ESL assessment practices.
